Imagine being tied to a tree in the middle of October, its raining outside , temperatures have dipped into the 50’s with no shelter. Barely able to stand, it was reported he had barked for 4 days. The gentle giant that appears in the photo didn’t have to imagine. Officer Horne brought him to us on that cold, rainy morning of October 14, 2004. Thin, staggering, wet and dirty, he had a personality all his own. He became known as “Sky”. It wasn’t long until he had his very own fan club and was showered with gifts such as his own bed, feeding stand and “special” treats. Sky had his own visitors, many times they were here “just to see Sky”. Almost a year later, full of court delays, Sky has earned his right to a better life. While here, we all shared in his care. He came to us with a host of medical problems, hookworms, ear infection, eye infection and the one we all dreaded the most, heartworm disease. We addressed all of those, but one thing we could not help, a hip injury from long ago, will continue to cause him discomfort for all his years to come. Today, August 25, 2005, Sky will go to enjoy the rest of his life with a loving family, never to see a cold, rainy day from the end of a chain again. Sky has touched so many lives. I personally will miss chasing him from the flower bed and his grand entrance into the cat room every morning. Sky always had room for one more on his doggy bed and David was sure to take time out and assure him that although we where busy, he was very special. It’s funny how a simple nudge with a nose or a sloppy lick of the tongue can touch your heart. When we speak of the funny stories we have shared, I’m sure a “Sky” story will be told by someone. We wish him luck with his new family, he will surely touch their lives as he did ours. “Sky”, the gentle giant, will remain in our thoughts and hearts forever! Shona Osborne, Animal Welfare Mgr. We will all miss Sky.
Dave's favorite position with Sky.
Time to say Good-bye.
